A Radical, Holistic Approach To Constipation

If you've been suffering from daily discomfort due to constipation, it's understandable that you're in a hurry to have it go away - and the faster, the better! The good news is that even if you've been living with constipation (for what seems like forever), it is possible to heal it and I can show you how.

"I did the recommended treatment for the constipation as given in Listen To Your Colon and I have been going everyday since. I am very happy with the recommendations from the book and plan to do another probiotic retention enema when I get the rectum healed."
- Laurinda K., Illinois

For those of you who already know me, you know that my emphasis is on natural, holistic healing - which addresses the root cause of a symptom, rather than merely suppressing it. And that's what I show people how to do in this book, Listen To Your Colon, so that you can get not just quick, symptomatic relief, but also heal the long-term, underlying cause of your chronic constipation. The goal of holistic healing is not to take herbal supplements just to suppress your symptoms (the same way drugs do), but rather to heal the imbalance or dis-ease in your body that is causing the constipation.

For long-term healing, you have to look at the totality of the variables that contribute to constipation, and then make the necessary changes in each area: Diet, stress and emotional factors, mineral deficiency, drug use, nutrient deficiency and gut microflora.

Medications that can cause or worsen constipation include:

Interestingly, if medication is contributing to your constipation problem, you may find that fiber supplements actually worsen the problem rather than helping.

What Causes Constipation?

There are a number of potential causative factors for constipation, which include:

Lack of good, protective flora in the gut - without a good balance of healthy bacteria in your colon (and throughout your digestive system) you will not be able to digest your food properly; extracting and absorbing all the nutrients. Without a protective, healthy bacterial flora, you will also have an overgrowth of Candida albicans (a yeast microorganism), which can cause numerous problems throughout your whole body. Candida albicans yeast organisms also release a total of 178 toxins into your gastrointestinal tract, which (depending on your particular body) can result in either constipation or diarrhea. Without a good population of healthy bacteria, you will also have a proliferation of bad (harmful) bacteria in your intestines. So, a root cause of constipation - often stemming back to infancy - is a lack of good, healthy bacteria in the gut and a balanced microflora environment.

Dehydration or insufficient water intake - contributes to hard, dehydrated stools that are difficult to pass. Also causes toxin buildup throughout the body since the cells don't have enough water to cleanse and flush toxins.

Poor diet - an overabundance of unhealthy or constipating foods and a lack of healthy foods make it very difficult for your digestive system to function properly.

Laxative abuse, overuse or reliance - long-term laxative use basically teaches your colon's peristaltic mechanism (rhythmic contractions of the intestinal wall) to switch off or decrease. You no longer need your body to initiate the signals for peristaltic activity or moving your bowels, since the laxatives are doing it. Long-term laxative overuse (whether drug or natural) can also damage bowel nerves, muscle and tissues.

Inadequate exercise - if you are not at least walking or doing something to limber up your hips and pelvis, get blood flowing briskly, and your respiration active (which affects all internal organs as the diaphragm expands and contracts), then likewise, your bowels will also become rigid, sluggish and dense.

Poor bowel habits (i.e., not going when you first feel the urge) - again, similarly to laxative overuse, you can train your bowel not to signal its desire to evacuate. Remember, gastroenterologists refer to the gut as "the second brain" - in fact, it contains more neurotransmitters (60%) than the brain itself. So your gut is highly intelligent and emotional and learns quickly. Like a poor bacterial flora, this is often a factor that originated in early childhood. If children are not toilet trained with compassion and patience, or are not allowed to relax and listen to their body due to parental expectations, or a busy schedule, daycare, etc., then constipation can start very early on.

Certain medications and supplements - cause or exacerbate constipation these include narcotic pain relievers, certain antidepressants, iron supplements, too much calcium (or in form that is poorly absorbed) and too much zinc. You should do a quick check of all the supplements and medications you're taking; type each one into Google together with the word "constipation" and see what comes up. For example, you would type in: calcium constipation or Zoloft constipation.

Certain medical conditions, including stroke, hypothyroidism, lupus and MS can cause or exacerbate constipation. Hypothyroidism (low thyroid) is very common in adult women, so definitely get your thyroid levels checked if you're a female over age 30.

Digestive disorders, including IBS, IBD, or idiopathic constipation - these are actually medical terms, that are not the cause of anything, but merely a description of a pathology and its symptoms. However, if you have been diagnosed with one of these conditions, then it indicates that constipation is merely one of a collection of gut problems that you currently have. To heal IBS or IBD (Crohn's, colitis, diverticulitis, etc.) you will need my book Listen To Your Gut, which contains many more in-depth protocols to address all the contributing factors of these diseases. This book just deals with constipation itself.

Painful defecation (which may lead to poor bowel habits or fear of defecating) - if something hurts, we're not likely to want to keep repeating it! Pain upon passing stool is usually due to very large or hard stools, anal or rectal fissures, or anal stenosis (narrowing of the rectum).

Tense, spasming intestines - a good evacuation of the bowel requires relaxation and the ability to open, release, and let go. Tension and spasming can be caused by primarily physical factors; lack of good bacteria, magnesium deficiency, potassium deficiency, etc. It can also be caused by primarily emotional factors, for example, too much stress, inability to relax, past traumas stored in body tissues, etc. Or, it can be caused by a combination of both physical and emotional/psychological factors.

Anal stenosis (narrowing or restriction of the rectum and/or internal anal sphincter) - again, this can result in pain upon defecating, or, it can simply make it extremely difficult and sometimes impossible to pass stool. The resulting straining and pushing to squeeze the stool through a very narrow opening can then often result in internal or external hemorrhoids.

Obviously, the cause of your constipation is going to affect what you need to do to heal it. So we're going to go through solutions for all of the above causative factors in the sections below. For most people, more than one of the above will be a contributing factor and therefore, the best success comes from addressing all of the factors.

Mind/Body Interplay

I've mentioned various physical factors above that cause or exacerbate constipation. However, it's equally important to address any emotional or mental factors. Here is an interesting article excerpt to get you thinking about this piece of the puzzle. Reza Shaker, MD says:

"We have for the first time, using fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging), shown that the neural circuits and brain cells of IBS sufferers are overly sensitive to some stimuli. Just as the psychological state of a patient affects breathing and the beating of the heart, it also affects the gut."

Essentially, this means that stress can cause the colon to speed up or slow down the motility or transit time of stool, resulting in either constipation or diarrhea. This is not airy-fairy, woo-woo stuff; this is hard science. Whether there's a particular life-event after which constipation became a problem, or whether you're "just" dealing with periodic or ongoing stressors (work, relationship, etc.) in your life, you still need to heal this stress or trauma using a mind/body healing tool.

Emotional or psychological stress also reduces rectal blood flow. As with any part of your body, adequate blood flow is necessary for normal functioning:

"In a study of 34 women with chronic constipation, UK investigators linked emotional distress with changes in the nerve pathway that helps control gut function.

They say the findings suggest a specific path through which psychological factors directly influence the digestive system.

Women with chronic constipation were more likely than healthy women to report anxiety, depression and feeling less "feminine." They also found it harder to form close relationships.

Moreover, the investigators found that the poorer a patient's psychological well-being was, the lower her rectal blood flow. As for healthy women, there was no link between blood flow and psychological factors -- which, the researchers point out, was partly due to the fact that there was little variance in these measures among healthy women.

The investigators demonstrated a direct demonstrable link between certain aspects of central brain activity -- anxiety, depression, feeling 'unfeminine' -- and gut dysfunction.

These findings also echo existing evidence that patients with chronic constipation have higher rates of depression and anxiety, according to the researchers."

Whichever healing modality you choose to address the stress, anxiety, depression, sadness, trauma, etc. in your life, it must be a therapy that integrates the mind with the body - or you will not see long-term results. Psychotherapy and other forms of talk or mental therapy on their own, will not produce good results. The stress and/or trauma must be addressed and released from the physical and energetic body, as well as your conscious mind.

Different Types of Constipation

Before looking at treatments for constipation, it is important to first identify which kind of constipation you have. Through the course of my research, consultations with clients, feedback from readers, and my own struggle with constipation, I have come to identify two different types of constipation. Since I have not come across any labels for these in the medical literature (or perhaps I just didn't read widely enough), I have made up my own labels to distinguish between these two different types of constipation. I call them peristaltic constipation and stenosis constipation. Of course, while most people seem to suffer from one or the other, there are people who suffer from a combination of the two.

1. Peristaltic Constipation
This type of constipation can consist of many different symptoms or factors, but the defining elements are as follows:

2. Stenosis Constipation
I came up with the name for this one based on the medical label of anal stenosis (narrowing, tightness or stricture of the anal canal). Stenosis constipation means that you experience one or more of the scenarios below:

"I really enjoyed it! I found your suggestions helpful - really liked the holistic approach to solving these types of problems. It is obvious that you have looked at the research from all angles comprehensively - especially with identifying the different types of constipation - which I did not know there was so many - and explaining how to treat them. I agree with you completely that most ailments can be healed naturally and use of the pharmaceutical is ridiculous. Medical doctors do not always have the best treatment options. In fact, I beginning to wonder if some of them know anything at all! I am looking forward to trying some your suggestions - will keep you posted! I am sure there are many other people out there who will be grateful for this information."
- Jane S., Hong Kong

Foods That Worsen Constipation

The following foods are generally recognized as causing or worsening constipation:

Unhealthy fats- food that is deep-fried in commercial vegetable oil, or prepared with unhealthy oils (hydrogenated vegetable oils, margarine, regular mayonnaise, denatured oils). Do not eat these unhealthy fats at all, instead, ingest good, healthy fats.

Too high a proportion of meat in the diet (especially beef and pork) - a good way to reduce excessive meat intake is to make sure your plate contains 2/3 non-starchy vegetables and only 1/3 meat and/or starch (rice, potatoes, bread). There's nothing wrong with meat. Meat has been a vital food for humans for millions of years. Problems arise when the body does not get enough good fats and non-starchy vegetables as well.

Pasteurized cheese and other pasteurized dairy foods - once breastmilk is heated past body temperature, the good bacteria and enzymes that aid digestion are killed and the protein is denatured. If it is homogenized, the fat is denatured and harmful to the arteries. It is now a toxic food and should not be consumed - this holds true for all mammalian milk, whether it is human, goat or cow breastmilk. Raw (unpasteurized) dairy products, however, are fine and usually beneficial.

Too high a proportion of starchy foods in the diet; especially potatoes, bread, rice and corn. Follow the same rule above: make 2/3 of your plate non-starchy vegetables. For the other 1/3, you can choose between meat and starch.

High-sugar foods - sugar is unhealthy for the body in so many ways and bowel health is certainly one of them. Use maple syrup, sucanat (unrefined sugar cane), or unpasteurized honey whenever you need sweetness. And save your refined sugar for when it counts. If you eliminate sugar as much as possible, then you can really enjoy that occasional chocolate bar or piece of cake when you do have it.

Many of these may be things you've already noticed affecting your body negatively. Nevertheless, keep in mind that everyone's body is different and there may be things that I advise you not to eat that you can actually tolerate quite well. Our bodies are unique, finely tuned composites embodying all the complexity and variety of who we are. No one else's body is going to be or function exactly like yours. So, at all times, keep your own body as your final authority and decision-maker in what's right, or not right for you.
