Healing Colitis, Crohn's, Diverticulitis & IBS Is An 8-step Process
After nine years of doing private consultations for people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and answering literally thousands of questions on my Forum, I have come to see that there are eight key protocols that nearly everyone needs to implement in order to see their digestive healing progress rapidly:
- Rest the bowel
- Eradicate pathogens
- Re-populate the gastrointestinal tract with good bacteria
- Heal inflammation and ulceration
- Resolve nutrient deficiencies
- Detox your living environment
- Heal emotional contributors
- Balance your endocrine system
By the time people find their way to my protocols, their bacterial flora is usually unbalanced throughout their gastrointestinal tract. If they haven’t already had repeated antibiotic use since childhood, then the medical exploratory and diagnostic tests alone have destroyed much of the good bacteria in their small and large intestine. When the good, protective bacteria are depleted, then pathogens like yeast (Candida albicans), viruses, parasites, and bad bacteria flourish.
This profusion of pathogens, combined with (and causing) inflammation and damage to the mucosal lining, then results in Leaky Gut Syndrome; whereby undigested food particles and bad bacteria leach into the bloodstream and trigger allergic reactions and infection in other locales.
The protocols needed to heal Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) therefore focus on providing bowel rest via a special elemental diet, eradicating pathogens from the gut, rebalancing the bacterial flora, healing the damage done to the mucosal lining and intestinal wall, healing the emotional factors that lead to susceptibility in the gut in the first place (and ongoing), addressing any nutrient deficiencies, supporting the healing process with a healthy living environment and balancing the endocrine system – which is usually malfunctioning due to chronic illness and drug use.
Let’s look at each of these eight healing steps in more detail…
1. Bowel Rest
In extreme cases, the best and fastest way of healing IBD (Crohn’s, colitis, diverticulitis) is to go on an elemental diet (as outlined in my book, The IBD Remission Diet) in order to provide bowel rest and eliminate any trigger foods, whilst addressing the underlying conditions of infection and inflammation in the digestive system. An elemental diet is also used if the person is very malnourished or underweight, or if there is ongoing intestinal bleeding.
If the person doesn’t require anything as drastic as an elemental diet, then they just follow the appropriate Healing Diet (in Chapter 3 of Listen To Your Gut) for their symptom profile, whilst implementing the protocols below. If they do begin with an elemental diet, then they also begin simultaneously on the protocols below. If tolerated, the multi-pronged healing approach usually produces the quickest results.
The great news is that a number of my readers have now tested using raw milk (unpasteurized milk from pasture-fed cows) instead of Absorb Plus for their elemental diet and if they can tolerate raw milk, then they show great improvement. Others have used a combination of Absorb Plus and raw cow or raw goat’s milk. However, for people in extreme disease states, they usually can only tolerate an elemental shake product.
2. Eradicating Pathogens
To get rid of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, yeast (Candida albicans), mycobacteria and parasites, utilize Jini’s Wild Oregano Oil Protocol (see Chapter 2 of Listen To Your Gut). If you have a mycobacterial infection, you will need to cycle on and off the Protocol for 2 –3 years to eradicate all the mycobacteria – as they have a dormant/active lifecycle.
People generally start with Jini’s Wild Oregano Oil Protocol and then upon completion of the first cycle, move onto high dose, therapeutic probiotic supplementation. Of course, they have already begun probiotic supplementation with Jini’s Wild Oregano Oil Protocol, so their system doesn’t usually have much difficulty transitioning to high dose probiotics.
3. Re-Populate The Gut Flora
Probiotics for IBD and IBS treatment must be ingested in a potent, bioavailable form; the bacteria must be capable of colonizing the gastrointestinal tract and must be ingested in high enough amounts to have a therapeutic effect. This means, that to see results (based on clinical trials), you need to ingest a minimum of 7 – 10 billion c.f.u. of each species, per day. Learn how to choose a potent probiotic for therapeutic use, so that your probiotic will actually be capable of shifting your bioterrain.
However, if your IBD is in a very active state, or you are highly sensitive to probiotics, then you must start out with small amounts and very gradually build up. In these cases, it is often best to start with an infant species of bacteria called B. infantis and then gradually work your way up to the adult species like L. acidophilus, B. bifidus and L. Bulgaricus.
Once you can tolerate therapeutic levels of probiotics (and many can right away) then the best results are seen from probiotic layering. This means you take both the powders and the capsules to maximize the beneficial effects of each and then you also perform Jini’s Probiotic Retention Enema – where a probiotic enema is retained in the colon until all the liquid is absorbed, so the probiotics can immediately begin to colonize the large bowel, without having to go through the digestive tract.
4. Heal Inflammation & Ulceration
Whilst the protocols already outlined above greatly contribute to the healing of intestinal inflammation and ulceration, targeted herbal supplementation is also highly beneficial and produces more rapid healing.
If you have ongoing bleeding from the colon, then Jini’s Healing Implant Enema, along with MucosaHeal and George’s Aloe Vera Juice is utilized whilst on an elemental diet. If bleeding is mild or sporadic, or is only from the small intestine, MucosaHeal is used along with George’s Aloe Vera Juice. L-glutamine, n-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) and probiotics are also very helpful, along with the appropriate Healing Diet.
5. Resolve Nutrient Deficiencies
Here are the nutritional supplements that pretty much everyone with IBD needs to take, due to increased loss through diarrhea and/or lack of absorption of nutrients:
- Full spectrum multi-vitamin and multi-mineral – yes, it would be ideal to ingest these in whole-food form, however many people with IBD cannot tolerate whole food vitamins. Angstrom-sized, or nanoparticle minerals are very easily tolerated and highly absorbable, but are also a bit more expensive. So whilst the regular mineral supplements are not ideal, they do still produce beneficial results and are certainly better than nothing. Due to the alkalizing effect of minerals (since people with IBD tend to have a hyper-acidic pH), I strongly recommend that IBD sufferers take both the Bone Support nanoparticle minerals and the Trace Minerals – these will produce the most rapid healing.
- 2,000-3,000 IU vitamin D3 per day. Discover the right dosage for your skin color and environment.
- 4 – 6 capsules cod liver oil per day (or 2 teaspoons)
- 2 tablespoons Udo’s oil per day
- Pycnogenol or grape seed extract
- Coenzyme Q10
- Most people with Crohn’s disease also suffer from anemia. But then iron supplements are irritating to the gut and can trigger intestinal bleeding. The solution again, is to take your iron in nanoparticle, or angstrom-sized form. This means that the iron is instantly absorbed into the bloodstream and does not require digestion. Therefore, it also does not irritate the GI tract.
- Vitamin C in mineral ascorbate form – needed for immune system but also for blood clotting. Do not take in ascorbic acid form or it will exacerbate diarrhea.
Each of these supplements is vital for healing various facets of the IBD pathology and they also work synergistically to accelerate healing. The links in the text above will take you to the exact products that I recommend, but feel free to get them from your local health store, then you won’t need to pay shipping.
Note: If you are having more than 3 bowel movements per day, then you must not take anything in capsule form, as the transit time through the gut is too fast to be properly absorbed and utilized. In that case, you need to open capsules and dissolve the contents into an Absorb Plus shake, or diluted apple juice, or chew them.
6. Detox Your Living Environment
A major part of the healing process involves reducing and eliminating, as much as possible, the toxins in your lifestyle that you sense are detrimental to you. You need to become aware of all the elements of so-called “normal” life that are actually toxic. If you want your body to heal, you have to create an environment that supports healing – not one that sabotages your efforts. In Chapter 4 of Listen To Your Gut, I take you through every room in your house and show you how to make your living environment safe and supportive. What pans are you cooking with? How much electromagnetic radiation is in your house? What elements of your home are off-gassing harmful chemicals while you sleep?
7. Emotional Contributors
Over 60% of your body’s neurotransmitters are not in your brain, but in your gut! (see Dr. Michael Gershon’s book, The Second Brain for lots more about this). There is now an entire field dedicated to this emerging knowledge about the interrelation of the mind, emotions and the digestive system called Neurogastroenterology.
This is not airy-fairy stuff, this is hard science. If you find you have resistance to this idea, then consider blushing – a purely emotional event that instantly produces a marked physical reaction. If you don’t heal the psychological and emotional components of your dis-ease, then you will never have long-term health. It’s really that simple.
In my experience, the most effective mind/body therapies are EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), hypnotherapy and craniosacral therapy (at Level II or higher). You need to work with a skilled therapist, at least initially, to really see good results. And it’s best if you can use someone (like EFT therapist, Annabel Fisher) who is experienced with chronic illness; which is more complex and has many more layers than regular illness.
8. Balance Your Hormones
If you have been ill for longer than eight months, or if you have taken any kind of steroid or immune suppressant drug, then it is highly likely your adrenal gland and thyroid glands (at least) are not functioning properly.
Ideally, you should see a doctor who specializes in hormone balancing and have your endocrine system tested properly. You should then follow a natural hormone supplement program tailored to your specific needs. However, since we have seen that many people either cannot afford to do this, or just can’t seem to allocate the time/energy to do it, I am going to give you a shortcut that is likely to help in the majority of cases.
Endocrine specialist, Jonathan V. Wright MD, has developed a holistic endocrine supplement called Thyroplex. He reasons that you should never just treat one gland in isolation – since they are all linked like dominoes. Therefore, you need to support the entire endocrine system in a return to balance. I agree with Dr. Wright and many of my readers with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) see very good results from taking Thyroplex (there is one for males and one for females). Women with IBD usually also benefit from taking natural progesterone cream (a dime-sized amount rubbed into the soles of the feet 1x/day).
But again, it is definitely recommended that you see a doctor who specializes in hormones and have your individual situation assessed properly.
And there you have it! If you implement each of these eight steps (simultaneously if possible) you will have the fastest, most thorough natural treatment plan for your Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, or IBS. Of course, you will need to use various additional supplements as needed – FissureHeal if you have anal/rectal fissures, or HemorrHeal if your bleeding is from internal or external hemorrhoids, syringed wild oregano oil for fistulas, L-glutamine, bentonite clay, or psyllium seed for diarrhea, etc.
The key is to do all eight thoroughly – preferably simultaneously – without skipping over any of them. Step-by-step guidelines for implementing each step, including targeted Healing Diets, self-assessment tests, symptom guides, etc. are given in my book, Listen To Your Gut:
Holistic healing = Long-term results
Remember, these are entrenched, systemic disorders and healing them requires a multi-pronged, holistic approach - where you SIMULTANEOUSLY implement a number of different protocols, each addressing a different component of your dis-ease. It's also crucial to get the right dosage, and the right formulation or preparation of a supplement, and to take it in the right order, to get the best results possible.
For example, many people have experienced relief and success from following Elaine Gottschall's Specific Carbohydrate Diet. This diet starves out the pathogenic bacteria that feed on carbohydrates, thus usually resulting in a marked reduction and often cessation of symptoms. But what happens when you try to go to a restaurant, or travel, or eat at a friend's house? You can't. Because Gottschall's book is just a diet.
A crucial step missing from Gottschall's regime (since we're using it as our example), is that It doesn't address the need to repopulate the gastrointestinal tract with high doses of potent, therapeutic probiotics, thus restoring the gut flora to normal. Once your gut flora is healthy and balanced, you can eat a wide variety of foods with no negative impact. You can also digest, extract and absorb the nutrients from your food. Leaky Gut Syndrome disappears and so do many former food allergies and intolerances.
Dealing with a hypersensitive gut
Sounds simple right? Just go to your local health store and pick up some probiotics? Unfortunately, no. People with IBS and IBD have hypersensitivities in many areas. Thus, probiotics (and only certain species) need to be introduced in a certain way, gradually increased over time and then maintained at a high dosage (often layering between oral supplements and colonic retention enemas) for an extended period of time. The probiotic section alone in Listen To Your Gut is over 30 pages long, to ensure you're given all the tools and information you need to implement this therapy properly. But for now, you can get going by downloading my complimentary Probiotic Report.
Gottschall's diet, and other diets or simplified remedies that only address one component, still leave you with a greatly restricted lifestyle, since they have only healed one aspect of your disease. In order to be truly freed from the oppression of illness, you need to address and heal ALL the contributing factors to your particular disorder. Listen to these examples of people's Healing Journeys for firsthand evidence of how this all works.
